In Juiz de Fora, teachers, university students and educators are coming back to the classroom. They take part of the Extension Course on Homosexuality, developed by the MGM in partnership with the SECAD (Secretary of Further Education, Literacy and Diversity of the Ministry for Education) and Secretary for Education of the Juiz de Fora Prefecture. In this course, teachers attend to talks on the role of the school in the sexual orientation and seminars discussing questions such as human rights, gender relations, media and health.
The objective of this course is to acquire knowledge about sexual orientation diversity and motivate the participants to implement in their schools what they learn. In 2006, 110 teachers were trained. The target for 2007 is 120 trainees.
The Extension Course on Homosexuality was one of the 15 (out of 95) projects short-listed by the Ministry of Education (MEC) in 2005. It is a landmark, since this is the first time MEC releases public funds to the homosexual cause. The project takes its participants to discuss 10 themes related with homosexuality.
